New Commission: Chicken Potholders

 Chicken Potholders

Finished Pot Holder
Never in my life would I have thought to make something like these. I know that some people have chicken themed kitchens, so I guess it fits. I was asked by my mother's friend if I could make these. After thinking about how to figure out the pattern, I decided to just find a free pattern for it. I had previously, on a different project, figured out a pattern from a picture of a simple potholder, so I knew I could do it for these. Anyways, because I was a little thrown off by the request anyways, I just used the premade pattern. I found this one from "Amy's Crochet Creations" on blogger. Turns out that I liked how the pattern turned out instead of the picture that she provided.
Requested potholder

I got some "I Love this Cotton" from Hobby Lobby soon after that. I didn't know how much I would need, so I just got 3 skeins of the color "Sunlit Seafoam". After making 2 pot holders, I found out how much I used in order to price them. Thankfully, it was just enough for all 8 potholders that she requested. For the comb and the beak, I used a random reddish-orange cotton yarn from my stash and "I Love this Cotton" in mustard respectively. I still have a good bit of the mustard left over and I used just under 30 grams of the miscellaneous red color.
Holding 2 strands together

After trying out the pattern with some test yarn, it turned out way too floppy and thin for a potholder. After that, I deliberated between either holding 2 strands together, or sewing two layers together. After deciding that making double of the potholders would make them overly expensive and extremely not fun to make, I chose to just double up the yarn. It made a much sturdier product and it made it perfect for a potholder. Of course, it was still a little floppy, but if I had added another strand, I wouldn't have been able to crochet it.

Before the beak and comb

Thankfully, the pattern was simple(for an intermediate crocheter), and it was also free. I could whip out one in about 20 minutes and I charged 7 dollars for each. The customer ordered 8 and that turned out to be 56, but she paid 70 dollars...Praise God for that. I am very thankful for her generosity because that was 14 more dollars than what I asked for.
